about
Not Vital (b. 1948) is an internationally renowned Swiss artist whose career has spanned the past 50 years.
Originally from the village of Sent in the Engadin Valley, he has lived a nomadic existence across the world and is now considered both one of Switzerland’s most prominent contemporary artists and a leading, radical voice in the world of contemporary sculpture. Whilst primarily a sculptor, his practice is extremely prolific; producing drawings, prints, paintings and functioning buildings. Since leaving Switzerland aged 19 years old to attend art school in Paris, Vital has been constantly exploring the world and the potential of different materials; examining how they are intimately connected to both people and places.
His works are included in major public collections such as Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York City, USA; The Museum of Modern Art, New York City, USA; The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, France; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, USA; Fonds Municipal d’Art Contemporain, Geneva, Switzerland; Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Bielefeld, Germany; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, USA; Philadelphia Museum, Philadelphia, USA; The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, USA; Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, Aichi, Japan; and many more.
