YALI and IKEBANA Projects

Hanadome

May 9, 2023 - May 12, 2023
PATERSON ZEVI, London

PATERSON ZEVI is proud to present: 'Hanadome', a collaboration between YALI and IKEBANA projects, bringing together the craftsmanship of Venetian glassblowers with the aesthetics of Ikebana (Japanese art of flower arrangement).

YALI is debuting a new series of sculptural objects that respond directly to the foundations of the Ikebana practice and philosophy brought by IKEBANA projects. A hanadome (translated from Japanese literally as ‘holding flowers’) is a glass tool originally used for Ikebana flower arrangements. The re-imagined Hanadome sculptures have curvy lines that gently hold flowers and allow for endless creative possibilities. Inspired by this tradition, YALI has created unique glass objects, made entirely by the hands of Murano artisans who have been honing their craft for generations. To be used as a stand-alone object or together with flowers or dry material, the Hanadome’s transparent glass structure reflects the natural light and the beauty of its surroundings. The organic, asymmetrical shape of each glass piece winds around itself – an almost weightless ball suspended in the air. As Marie-Rose Kahane of YALI writes:

While working on new designs, in glass, wood, porcelain, ceramics or metal, nature is always at the back of my mind. The Engadin mountains and lakes are my earliest images. With IKEBANA, all the objects come to life.

IKEBANA projects emphasizes a modern vision of Ikebana through a series of art collaborations, events, retreats and other forms of artistic expression. Working closely with YALI and Murano craftsmen on creating Hanadome, IKEBANA projects aims to highlight this traditional art and explore its infinite contemporary expressions. On the occasion of the Hanadome's presentation at PATERSON ZEVI, in association with London Craft Week, IKEBANA projects will create one-off Ikebana arrangements with seasonal flowers and dried plants, opening a dialogue with the glass objects and giving them new meanings.

This presentation marks a continuation of PATERSON ZEVI’s passion for creating dialogues between art and design in London and Venice. It follows on from YALI’s inclusion in New Nature (June 2022) where Kahane’s unique moribana vessels were a central part of the group exhibition curated by Julia Tarasyuk in collaboration with IKEBANA projects. YALI also debuted a series of glass and metal furniture, titled ANGEL Tables (September 2022) at PATERSON ZEVI as part of the London Design Festival.
