Us and Them is a site-specific installation by UK-based sculptor Steve Hurtado (b. 1979). This exhibition has been commissioned by Alma Zevi will be accompanied by a maquette and three drawings. Hurtado explores the notions of: sculptural environments, divisions of space, habitats, and the way that communities congregate and interact. These explorations can be recognized in Hurtado’s two most recent sculptural series: Bunkers and Stadiums. While we can see some influences of Us and Them, such as Mike Nelson, Rachel Whiteread and Jannis Kounellis, Hurtado’s language remains experimental and informed by a powerful vision. The latter offers a marriage of fantasy and history, a juxtaposition between subjective memory and the honesty of materials.
